The standard ISO 1461 describes the functional requirements with regard to galvanising. In practice, however, this does not always give the desired result. For this reason the umbrella organisation Zinkinfo Benelux has set up a classification system that was introduced by the galvanising industry. This classification system makes a distinction between ‘Functional’ and ‘Aesthetic’ galvanising. Both classes are described in the table below:

CLASS F

  • Description of the functional requirements set with regard to the corrosion-resistant effect of the applied zinc layer in accordance with EN ISO 1461
  • Description of the structural requirements as laid down in EN 14713-1 and 2
  • EN ISO 1461 does not define aesthetic requirements

CLASS E

  • Sharp points, zinc ash residue and unevenness are removed from the whole structure
  • Dry storage (e.g. against white rust)
  • Non-galvanised areas also to be treated aesthetically
  • Finishing of visible sides for smoother surface
  • Optional: packaging to prevent white rust

The aim of this system is to ensure that the end result of hot-dip galvanising is more in line with the expectations of the end customer.
